When the license went to Gearbox and Megaton was pulled from the various marketplaces, it would have been forgivable to simply release the game over again and call it a day. In truth, I am extremely excited about this new edition, despite owning the 3D Realms release, Megaton Edition, across four different platforms. Of course, more details will be given as they come to light. Created by the original team, one can only imagine what will be seen and heard during this brand new return to classic Duke form. The final item in the package is a new eight mission level pack that takes Duke around the world. From what was heard during the demo, itвЂ™s a mixture of insight into the design process and self defacing humor that one would expect from the creators of a title such as this. This way there is no worry over missing anything because of a harrowing firefight. It is set so that the player will need to trigger the comments when the commentary mode is on. Gearbox got the band back together, and recorded developer dialogue that is peppered liberally throughout the game. Still fresh graphics arenвЂ™t all that has been added to this edition. Ammunition isnвЂ™t exactly scarce, but reaching the maximum space allotted isnвЂ™t the norm either. Knowing when to throw a pipe bomb and when to just use a pistol is just as important as using the strongest available weapon to cull the herd as quickly as possible. The player is forced to be accurate, fast, and strategic to make true headway through the missions. The combat is just as frantic as it was before, which is to be expected based on the motives behind this new version. This makes seeing the reworked skyboxes even easier. For example, where the building textures just repeated endlessly into the sky, they now have a definite cutoff point. A quick button press reverts the rendering back to how it looked when it was originally released, so one can see the new details. One would be forgiven for not immediately seeing the improvements. The puzzle solutions are the same, as are the weapon placement and level layout. Roaming around the first level, Hollywood Holocaust shows that everything looks and works exactly as it did before. The lighting itself is more atmospheric while still retaining the feel of the original game. Instead, everything looks somewhat sharper. Getting above a pig cop shows that it is still flatter than a poorly tuned instrument. So, enemies are still the two dimensional models on a faux 3D plane the way the original was. Instead, the philosophy is to have this version look the way it is remembered through rose tinted glasses. It will either be Hollywood Holocaust III or that Duke flys away in the spaceship and takes on the aliens on their own planet. Also I am thinking of making a sequil to this level. Those of you who have any ideas pleas be sure to mail them to me. This new edition isnвЂ™t a complete overhaul, though. Next Project My next project is to make a new monster for Duke Nukem ver1.5. Instead, Gearbox is taking the time to redo the lighting and some minor environmental details to improve the appearance on modern platforms. n00bs should like it, too.One of the surprises over the PAX weekend was GearboxвЂ™s announcement of a re-release of the classic Duke Nukem 3D.В Entitled Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour, the game itself isnвЂ™t just a simple matter of slappingВ it back onto digital store shelves. Hopefully, this will be a real treat for any Duke fan who wishes to reminisce about the old days. I'll post updates from time to time when I see fit, but it's a long way off from any releases. My ultimate goal is to completely modernize the visuals while keeping the true 'feeling' and formula of the map intact. Note that almost everything you see in the shots won't be in the final release, aside from the level's very fundamental layout/BSP. And I'd also like suggestions or ideas, too, though I'm already pretty certain on what the map will/won't include. I'm aware that it looks like total ***** right now, and really the only reason I'm posting this is so people will be able to see how far it's come when the map is finally complete. I've barely done any work on this map, especially when compared to how much time I plan to put into it.
